The Moon and the Sledgehammer will screen at the Towner Arts Gallery
on Sat 18 November at 7.30. Ben Rivers’ film, This is my Land, will also
show. Rivers is fascinated by people who live on the edge of society.
His film follows the life of old Jake in his remote and ramshackle
Aberdeenshire home. Like the Page family, Jake ‘inherited’ his lifestyle,
both having been once part of a thriving rural community.
Neither chose to live so remotely but equally, both chose not to give up
the freedom it offers in exchange for the doubtful rewards of consumerism.
The programme has been curated by Andrew Kotting and is part of a wider
free exhibition called Who You Walk With Alters What You Are.
It features three psychogeographical journey-works made in collaboration
with Iain Sinclair, featuring pinhole photographs (Anonymous Bosch),
artefacts, paintings (Eden Kötting) and film installations. Kotting’s own Gallivant screens on 2nd December.

We have a rare one-off American screening coming up this month. On 23rd July Moviate in Harrisburg Pennsylvania will screen the film at 7pm. MOVIATE is a volunteer operated, not for profit film co-op, dedicated to bringing independent, underground, and avant-garde Cinema and Sound events to the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area. We are beyond excited to announce what is probably the most perfect outdoor setting to watch the film. Cambridge Film Trust are holding screenings in a leafy copse, where you can sit outdoors under the stars on a warm summer’s August bank holiday evening and watch the Pages. What could be better? It will be like being in the woods with the family. Weather forecast predicts a mild evening. We are thrilled to have this amazing opportunity, I can’t wait!
The film will screen as part of the Cambridge Film Trust’s Film Festival. There will be two screenings on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th of the August bank holiday.
The screening will take place outdoors in a copse in the famous Granchester Meadows, amid ghosts of past visitors like Virginia Woolf, Bertrand Russell, Rupert Brooke and Alan Turing. Grab a hay bale and sit under the summer skies. This is one definitely not to miss! Tickets from their website
Berwick Film Festival 21st – 25th September 2016
THE MOON & THE SLEDGEHAMMER + Q&A with Philip Trevelyan
We are delighted to announce that Philip Trevelyan has been invited to the Berwick Film Festival in September to present three evenings devoted to his films and to take part in conversations with various artists. On Friday 23rd August the film will screen with young film maker and Turner Prize nominee, Luke Fowler’s intriguing short film, Bogman Palmjaguar (25 mins).
Screening of rare 16mm films
A second evening will be devoted entirely to some of his other, rarely seen works. To the absolute delight of film purists everywhere the films will be projected in their original 16mm. Films are the much lauded Ship Hotel – Tyne Main; Lambing, Trevelyan’s award winning student film and Big Ware, about the last traditional country potter.
On the third evening, The Moon & the Sledgehammer will screen Gorge Coeur Ventre (Still Life, 2016), by Maud Alpi, fresh from the Locarno film festival. More here
The conversations will range from Mrs Page to our relationship with the land and work, and of course aspects of film making, all promising some vibrant and stimulating sessions. Following the successful sell-out screening of the premiere of the restored copy at the Duke of York’s cinema in Brighton, we are delighted to announce a rare opportunity to watch a Philip Trevelyan DOUBLE BILL – The Moon & the Sledgehammer + Lambing (25 mins.)
For the first time in decades Trevelyan’s award winning student film will show on the big screen. The film features old shepherd Mr Dick Freeman, alone on his hilltop farm in the cold, dark nights of the lambing season. This early work already shows a powerful control of time and space with the subject seemingly oblivious to the camera, giving up glimpses into a shared intimacy, drawing us hypnotically into the shepherd’s life and Trevelyan’s vision.
