Civil War Era Nursing
& the Influence of Clara Barton

The Civil War holds the title of the bloodiest war in American history. The casualties that resulted from the Civil War fit into three separate categories: dead, wounded, and missing or captured. Of the reported casualties, 20 percent were deaths. About one out of every seven wounded soldiers died from his injuries. Of the men who died during the American Civil War, two-thirds succumbed due to disease not directly connected with battle. These statistics illustrate the prevalent issues with medical care and the need for nurses during this era.
